"Creasing" in "Washington" navel orange in Uruguay

Creasing incidence and severity in ‘Washington’ navel orange and control treatments of gibberellic acid (GA3, 10 or 20 mg.L-1), potassium nitrate (KNO3, 2%) or mono-ammonium phosphate sprays (NH4H2PO4, 2%), acidified to pH 4,5 ± 0,5, applied allone or combined, in early stages of fruit growth (41-55mm), were studied. Trials were conducted over three years in two commercial orchards located in Kiyú and Punta Espinillo (35° SL). Incidence and severity varied among years but not between orchards; both variables were positively correlated. GA3, applied alone or combined with KNO3 or NH4H2PO4, significantly reduced the affected fruit percentage. however, NH4H2PO4 applied alone had no effect. The GA3 spray applied at color brak was less effective controlling the disorder and had a negative effect on fruit color at harvest. Treatment effectiveness was independent from creasing incidence and severity. The economic analysis carried out with the most effective treatments (GA3 applied alone or combined with NH4H2PO4) showed an incremental profit, both in years of low and high incidence.
